The Burma civilian government does not seem to have decided to change its policies on press freedom. The media is still has undergone highly restrictive censorship, the imprisonment of journalists and bloggers is continue to be a common practice that is designed to scare their colleagues. Seventeen Burmese journalists and bloggers are being locked up in prison. Free speech is criminalized. Among 2,000 political prisoners were arrested for mostly distributing leaflets or sending information to media based in abroad. The latest evidence is a 21-year-old reporter, Sithu Zeya, who had reported for the Democratic Voice of Burma has already been sentenced in 2010 to eight years in jail and extended an additional 10-year recently. He was imprisoned for photographing the aftermath of the deadly bombings in Yangon in April 2010.
Burmese journalists cannot freely practice freedom of expression and cannot report freely about what is happening inside the country. A freelance reporter working for the forganization were all denied visas to conduct research for its report that is a common obstacle for the journalists who are trying to cover the news for Burma. If the government wants to implement democratic reform, the journalist must have a right to exercise their press freedom.
